When to Compare Design Systems
Comparing two design systems is useful when you are deciding between two brand directions, when you are migrating from one system to another, or when you are auditing a system against a reference. The diff shows you the exact differences so you can reason about the tradeoffs.
The most common comparison is between a warm editorial system (serif headings, cream background, brick primary) and a cool modern system (sans headings, dark background, blue accent). The diff shows that the palette, heading font, and ratio all changed, while the body font and base size stayed the same. That tells you the visual difference comes from color and heading choice, not from the body text.
The type scale diff is especially useful when you are deciding between two ratios. A minor third (1.2) and a perfect fourth (1.333) produce noticeably different hierarchies at the same base size. The diff shows the exact pixel difference at each step, so you can pick the ratio that gives the hierarchy you want.
