Character and Use Cases
Libre Baskerville , Libre Baskerville brings the proportions of a classical book face into a webfont. Pablo Impallari redrew the old-style Baskerville structure with the crisp contrast and clean apertures needed to survive screen rendering, so it reads literary without turning fragile at normal paragraph sizes.
The family is built for editorial text on the web: long articles, case studies, and publication sites where a Baskerville-like voice is wanted without licensing a commercial revival. It ships regular and bold in roman and italic, with a weight-axis variable version. Use it for headings and paragraphs above 18px; the design does its best work at that scale rather than as a tiny UI face.
Both weights earn their place. Regular (400) carries body text and subheadings; Bold (700) anchors titles, pull quotes, and place-name labels. Skip trying to build a nine-weight system from it; the family is deliberately minimal.

Compare alternativesFrequently Asked Questions
- How is Libre Baskerville different from the original Baskerville?
- The original was a hot-metal design from the eighteenth century. Libre Baskerville redraws it for modern screens, which changes stroke contrast and spacing enough that the letters stay stable at the sizes typography systems actually use.
- Can Libre Baskerville handle body text?
- Yes, that is its main job. It is heavier and more robust than its ancestor, so paragraphs hold up at 17 to 19px without the thin hairlines that make classical faces fragile on screens.
