Handwriting fonts

Handwriting and script faces imitate pen, brush, or marker strokes, and they carry more personality per character than any other category. That is exactly their risk: a paragraph of script is exhausting to read, while a single underlined signature or pull quote can change the whole mood of a page. The right dosage is a handful of words at a time, in a place where the reader has time to appreciate it.

Legibility varies a lot between designs. Some faces keep the base of each letter recognizable, others lean into flourish first. Preview the family on the actual words it will render, because a name or a product slug can trip over a joined pair that works fine in the specimen string. Color and size both matter here more than elsewhere: at display sizes a script becomes an illustration, and at caption sizes it becomes a smudge.

A script or handwriting face pairs with an unassuming body font so the gesture does not fight for attention. Caveat and Satisfy are the open-source options in the catalog, and both work as accents on top of a neutral sans. Keep the rest of the page steady, let the handwritten word do the talking, and test the result in the typography playground before shipping it as a headline.

Handwriting faces also need a license check before production use, since script fonts are more often commercial than the workhorse sans categories. The open-source options in the catalog carry the SIL Open Font License, so embedding and modification are allowed. If a client brings a commercial script from another source, confirm the webfont license covers embedding before counting on it. The subject of this page is a few words long because that is where scripts genuinely belong.
