Free Avenir alternatives

Free Avenir alternatives chase Adrian Frutiger's geometric sans: circles that are slightly flattened, a two-storey a, and warmth that Futura never had. Avenir Next is a paid family. Nunito, Poppins, Montserrat, and Manrope are the open faces people actually ship when the license budget is zero.

Poppins is the strictest geometry. Nunito is the roundest. Montserrat is louder at display sizes. Manrope sits between marketing and UI. None of them copy Frutiger's optical corrections on the uppercase G or the tail of Q.

Manrope

Manrope brings geometric clarity with a touch of warmth, similar to Avenir's balance of modern and friendly.

Avenir's geometry, in plain terms

Avenir's o is not a perfect circle. Frutiger flattened it so it would not look wider than the n. The t has a wide crossbar. The lowercase a is two-storey, which is why Avenir reads as text-capable where Futura often does not. If a substitute uses a single-storey a, you have already left Avenir's voice.

Nunito rounds the terminals more than Avenir. Poppins keeps the circles purer and therefore colder. Montserrat's M has splayed legs that Avenir does not. Manrope's apertures are more open, which helps small UI but moves it toward Proxima Nova territory.

When to leave Avenir

Leave when you cannot buy Avenir Next for web, when you need a variable file, or when the brand only used Avenir because a template bundled it. Keep Avenir when the identity was drawn around Next's condensed widths; none of the open substitutes match those widths well.

For a friendly SaaS marketing site, try Manrope or Nunito. For a geometric logo lockup that used to be Avenir Heavy, try Poppins 700 and check the counters at 24px.

Choosing among Nunito, Montserrat, Poppins, and Manrope

Body vs Display
Nunito and Manrope survive 16px body. Montserrat and Poppins get busy in long paragraphs. Use those two for headings and buttons.
Roundness
Nunito's terminals are the softest. If the brand is a kids product or a wellness app, that softness is a feature. If the brand is a bank, it is a bug.
Weight Evenness
Poppins' Black is very heavy; the Regular can feel thin next to it. Avenir Next's weights step more evenly. Check 400 next to 600 before you lock a scale.
Latin Plus More
If you need Vietnamese or extensive Latin, confirm glyph coverage on the font page. Avenir Next's language coverage is wider than some Google Fonts cuts.

Pair the substitute, do not orphan it

Avenir often sat over a serif body in print. On the web, Poppins over Open Sans and Nunito over Source Sans 3 are closer to what teams ship. Preview those pairings instead of stacking two geometrics.

FAQ

Is Poppins a free Avenir alternative?
It is the closest geometric match in this catalog, with a more assertive Regular and a single-storey a in some weights of related families. Treat it as a cousin, not a metric match.
Why does Nunito feel rounder than Avenir?
Nunito's terminals are explicitly rounded. Avenir's terminals are cut but optically softened. If you need Frutiger's restraint, Manrope is usually closer than Nunito.
Can Montserrat replace Avenir Next Condensed?
Not well. Montserrat has a condensed sibling on Google Fonts, but the proportions still differ. Recut the logo or buy the condensed Avenir width if the lockup depends on it.
